Our Approach
GIZ India implements its Indo-German cooperation programs using a cluster model, where related projects are grouped to foster collaboration, streamline learning, and build synergies. The Sustainable Urban and Industrial Development (SUID) Cluster is one such initiative, directly addressing India’s urban and industrial challenges.
Challenges We Address
The SUID cluster tackles the most pressing issues arising from rapid urbanisation and industrialisation:

Environmental Degradation and Emissions:
Urban and industrial growth has led to rising greenhouse gas emissions, polluted air and water, and strained natural ecosystems. -
Social Inequality and Poverty:
Despite economic progress, millions remain marginalised, lacking access to basic services, secure housing, and social protection.
Our Focus Areas
SUID currently runs 16+ active projects across India, organised under three thematic pillars:

Urban Development:
Supporting inclusive housing, sustainable urban planning, and municipal governance reforms. -
Transport:
Promoting low-emission mobility solutions such as Non-Motorised Transport (NMT), electric mobility, and integrated urban transport planning. -
Industry and Rivers:
Enhancing environmental compliance in industries, fostering circular economy practices, and improving river basin management.
How We Work

Capacity Building

Policy and Implementation
Projects contribute to policy formulation in areas like housing standards, urban mobility, and environmental regulations. We also support partners in translating these policies into practical, locally-adapted implementation plans.
Pilot Projects
We conduct on-the-ground pilot initiatives to test, refine, and demonstrate innovative solutions before recommending scale-up to wider regions or nationwide programs.
