Liveable, inclusive, and sustainable urban India.
We capacitate people and organisations to promote cleaner, inclusive, climate-friendly and resilient urban and industrial areas and integrated river basin management.
GIZ India manages its Indo-German bilateral cooperation interventions using a ‘cluster’ approach, grouping projects with shared aims to exchange know-how and develop synergies. The Sustainable Urban and Industrial Development (SUID) cluster respond directly to the environmental and social challenges
- environmental degradation and increased greenhouse gas emissions due to population growth and fast-paced urbanisation and industrialisation
- poverty and social exclusion, which remain in spite of the country’s rapid economic growth
The SUID cluster counts about 14 projects currently, working in synergy on the themes of
1. Urban Development
3. Industries and River clean up
All the projects work in close coordination with partners in government and non-state actors at national, state, and local levels throughout India. Enhancing capacities and sharing expertise are at the heart of all SUID and GIZ interventions.
The projects formulate policies and guidelines in their individual domains (e.g. housing, NMT, environmental standards) and help partners develop plans to put these policies into practice. Pilot actions are often used to demonstrate the benefits of proposed solutions and test-drive approaches before scaling up interventions to the state or national level.
As a cluster, SUID is able to reach across ministries and government departments and from local to national levels, aligning all of the different actors in pursuit of the common goal – sustainable and inclusive social and economic development in India.
