Climate Smart Cities

Training and Capacity Building

Strengthening Cities and preparing it to be ClimateSmart requires a holistic understanding of risks and vulnerabilities and incorporation of the same into the design and implementation of new urban development projects. Therefore, developing capacities of urban practitioners and public officials on ways to conceptualize and plan projects using a climate lens will help cities in reducing future risks and enhance urban resilience. The ‘ClimateSmart Cities’ project  focuses on selected fields of municipal services, in order to make cities climate resilient, support implementation and encourage monitoring. Further, to upscale these initiatives and practices in other smart cities, with the aim to multiply the impact and achieve the climate goals of the country.

For this purpose, the ClimateSmart Cities Project, in partnership with National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), German Institutes of Urban Affairs (Difu) and Technical University of Berlin (TUB) has developed focused training programme for urban practitioners and public officials. The developed manuals are aligned to ClimateSmart Cities Assessment Framework of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affair, Government of India. Based on the indicators for this framework, the project has developed training material that helps intensify capacity building and knowledge exchange.

The training material encapsulates –

  • Sustainable Construction and Demolition Waste Management
  • Urban Green Planning
  • Storm Water Management and
  • Green Buildings

The objective is to effectively build the capacities of cities towards implementing climate informed actions through hands on training workshops and knowledge assistance. To disseminate the leanings, further upscaling trainings are conducted in partnership with the regional institutes.

Our training institutes are –

  • Engineering Staff College of India (ESCI) – Hyderabad, Telangana
  • Tamil Nadu Institute of Urban Studies (TNIUS) – Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu
  • Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA) – Thrissur, Kerala

Through modules and workshops, training institutes are being informed about development and implementation of climate friendly measures.
